Bilingual ID cards?

Well, it’s official, ID cards will be introduced in this country. However, it seems that the UK Government will probably opt for English and French as the ‘official’ languages to be displayed on the cards. Personally, this is a bit of a contradiction in terms – i.e. an ‘identity’ card which does not display your language does not say much about you.
The cards will not be compulsory (except for airport workers) but I have a feeling that they could easily become compulsory at some point, and I’m not sure if I agree with that. I recently watched the film ‘The Invasion’ in which the citizens become zombie like, emotion-less creatures, who all behave the same way. I fear that introducing ID cards will be a step towards this kind of tribal society, where someone’s past, present and even future is summed up in a piece of plastic. Where you are cannot even go for a picnic in the countryside without taking your microchip in your back pocket. Of course, there are a number of arguments in favour of ID cards, the prevention of terrorism being the most obvious. More mundane examples include being able to pick up items from the post office without taking your passport and a file-load of bills, or being able to purchase alcohol without fear of being asked for ID (which happens to me all the time of course). But we will have to pay for such a privilege. Thirty pounds to be exact. Bargen.
